The HVAC industry has shortened the name of hermetic motor compressor to
compressor. Many people think of the unit as only a compressor when in reality, it is an electric motor connected to a compressor inside of a metal shell, affectionately known as a “tin can.” Some compressor failures are misdiagnosed as an electrical failure, when in reality, it was a mechanical failure. If a piston “copper plates” and seizes, or you “throw a rod” and then the motor “burns up”, the root cause was a mechanical failure, not an electrical failure. It is always important to have a NATE certified technician diagnose your compressor issues.
